I have always used DVDX2.2, divx 4.12, and xvid calculator to encode my dvd's to divx. But they always come out to about 660mb to about 685mb. They never come out any closer to 700mb. Then I started to use AutoGK to encode my movies but they still don't come out any closer to 700mb. Am I doing something wrong? I figure that the 20 or 40 mb that it doesn't use up could help improve the quality of the movie, although not by much. Anything I could do? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Forget about 'auto' methods. Do the conversion manually. Heres a couple of excellent guides to divx/xvid encoding, starting with the initial ripping to the final muxing. Once you do a couple you will never use an auto method again (its MUCH easier than it initially looks).

If I insist on backing up a DVD to Divx, I always use DR. Divx with the latest Divx encoder. I just tell it I want 1 disk at 695 or 700. Two pass encoding and I ALWAYS end up with a file that just fits on a normall 700mb CD. The quality is preety damn good to. No muss no fuss. Pretty much idiot proof.
DVD recording drives are so damn cheap now that I will not even bother with such a convertion anymore. There is simply no more excuses to do so. DVD to DVD all the way!No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD! -
Gordian Knot and DivX 5, two pass will hit it within a 200kb or so.
Here is a good guide:
