What's the speed of your HDD is it? 5400 RPM or 7200 RPM.

What are you using for capture hardware are you using?
    What type of software?

    Defrag your HDD
    Don't worry about fast-writes

Your device this GRAND AV USB2 is basic CAP device, take a look at:

    WinTV PVR-USB2
    http://htpcnews.com/main.php?id=wintvpvrusb2_1

Read and look over the above like. That's the best bet for you. Take back that so called GRAND AV USB2. You're not happy with it are you? The above is cost a little big more but you'll have fun with it. For the fun with it go to: www.gbpvr.com

WinTV PVR-USB2 has it's own hardware MPEG1/2 encoder which doesn't need to access the CPU for processing MPEG1/2 encoding. That GRAND AV USB2 is slowing down your system. Well you see the type of playback your getting after the recording.

Can you take back the GRAND AV USB2 device for your money and get the WinTV PVR-USB2? If not? Then you're stuck. You could try using third-party software, but there isn't much hope, if the GRAND AV USB2 isn't doing what's it suppose to be doing.

If you can change the drivers for the CAP with these freeware ones: http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/

    PVR software:
    Mainconcept PVR
Intervideo WinDVR 3 and WinDVD Recorder Platinum 5.x
These you can download for free and try them out and see which one works for you. But do intall the new WDM drivers from sourceforge first.

So you got good results with WinDVD Recorder, but you say it had stopped? Still if you can take back the Grand and buy the WinTV PVR-USB2 you could then use the GBPVR server/client www.gbpvr.com.
