  1. Thanks to the information and advice on this page I have managed to create good VCDs from Hi8 home DV tapes. Here is my query. I do the capturing and editing at home (Ulead Video Studio 5), I then convert to mpeg with TMPEGEnc. My CD burner at home is old and often crashes so I burn the VCDs with Nero 5 at work where there is a newer faster CD burner. So that means I copy the mpegs to a CD at home with EZCD Creator 5 , take them to work and transfer them to hard drive and burn them to VCDs with Nero. My question is am I losing quality by doing all that transferring. Also is the final quality of the VCD dependent on the grade of CDR. Blue, green or yellow etc. Thanks for any advice on this.

  2. All you're doing is shifting data blocks around, it's no different then downloading a file from someone else, except that you're transfering the file locally. You shouldn't be *losing* any quality of your MPEG files.

As far as CD colors go, I don't think there is much of a difference...it's just that some players require certain ones to play (i.e. silver). Just find a CD-R that your player likes and keep using it.

  4. You might try experimenting with a higher bitrate, I use 2520 on my VCD's from HI8mm, capture in uncompressed AVI, edit with ulead studio 6.0 pro, encode with TMPGE beta B, as 2520 on the bitrate, burn with Nero 5.5, They look really good.

  5. Hey thxkid, Good idea, always trying to improve quality. My TMpgEnc settings seem to be frozen. i.e. don't have control over the bitrate. What do I need to do? Also do you lose time on CDs? This is great advice Thanx guys

  6. You can unlock the TMPEG settings by loading the unlock.mcf template in the extra folder of the tmpeg template folder. It should have come with TMPEG when you downloaded it.
