DVD Rom drives do NOT have SPDIF (that I have ever seen anyway).
Some Soundcards have SPDIF.
You only need it if you want to output raw Ac3 or DTS to an external decoder/amp

Look at the back of the drive. If you find a two male pin (receptable) that says D (for data) and G (for ground) that is a SPDIF. You have to be carefull though because this SPDIF is at TTL level. You have to use a circuit to make is SPDIF standard (0.5 volt). Do not plug spdif output off the DVD-ROM straight to Receiver spdif input.Originally Posted by Nilfennasion
