We just receievd an mpeg that we need to watch at work. It won't play in media player or zoom. The file is listed as SVCD in some prog I found.
How do I easily convert that to a form that wmp can read?
My boss is already not too happy we couldn't play it right off the bat.
I didn't ask for a SVCD!!!![]()
I was able to copy the file from the CD to the hard drive. I assume just copying it was ok? I didn't need to rip it or anything? I'm sure I should know how to do this by now but it's midnight and I've a hundred other things I still need to do for work.
I greatly appreciate any help you can give. I bow down and kiss your Video God feet. You are the almighty ones. Praise the almighty! :P

SVCD's are Mpeg-2 files. you need an mpeg-2 deocder to play them. software dvd players have decoders in them, so you need to get a software dvd player. i think poweredvd has a trial version.

Ok, the boss is going to be happy for the next 30 minutes (the length of video the trial version of PowerDVD will play).
I told him that when he goes to lunch I'll covert the video to a form that can be played in Media Player (he's going to be giving this to opposing counsel so it needs to be in a form anyone can play).
How do I go about converting it to a form WMP can play?
Thanks, again. -
You can convert it to an avi file(it might take a while) with virtualdubmpeg2 and this guide.
or search through the guides and see if theres another format you can convert it to.
hope this helps -
Thanks. I'll give it a try.
One more question. When I look through the guides am I looking to convert SVCD to MPEG? I'm asking because when I look at those guides they refer to .dat files. I just have an MPEG.
Thanks -
You could try the trial of TMPGEnc, it has a 30 day MPEG2 codec. You could then convert to MPEG1.
See the guides at the link for help.
If you're giving to a client, depending on how long your movie is, an AVI may be too large to fit on a CD."Just another sheep boy, duck call, swan

Ugh. THat was a little too much for me to handle. There's nothing easier? I didn't know what half that stuff meant.

Most newer computers have some form of DVD player software (windvd, powerdvd etc.) which will install an mpeg2 codec and play your original SVCD-mpeg2 file. That's pretty basic stuff, the s/w can be bought cheaply enough or comes for free with most DVD drives.
If you really want to convert the video into a form that everybody can play, then you better choose mpeg1 as that is one of the few formats that came built into most versions of Windoze.
An avi will probably require the installation of a codec to be able to view it. Not recommended.
Here's a basic SVCD to VCD (mpeg1) guide.

Alot of these people don't have DVD drives. I'll check out the guide. Thanks, again.

Someone needs to invent a program that does all this stuff so we don't have to use multiple programs.

Download mediaplayer classic. It's free and it has a built in mpeg2 codec. It will play your svcd fine.

DVDx is free and has alot of guides. Used to use it quite a bit in my early days. Won't convert to WMV though...but it should get you from MPEG2 to MPEG1...or AVI.....then use free Windows Movie Maker ?
