  1. I used this program which came bundled with my burner, and I set it to create a video that's recorded from my VCR with an old tape of ours, and to use DVD compatible settings at Standard (2 hour) quality. I've tried both LPCM and DD 2.0 sound formats, and both are over 5.9 GB each. I also tried using Long quality (4 hours of video) and the file size was exactly the same as the Standard DVD quality. I can certainly use a DL disc, but why pay $10/disc for recording a 1 hour 55 minute video tape?

How can I get NVE3 to get a more realistic file size that'll fit on a standard DVDR?

Use the right tools. Don't struggle with toys. I'm sure there are tons of VHS to DVD guides to be read.

  3. I apologize, but yeah, I've been reading this site for years and have read all the relevant guides already. If YOU had read through the guides, you'd see my question isn't answered in any of them either Don't just assume I'm a n00b because of a low post count.

Anyways, I did manage to whittle the file size down to 4.32GB, which will work fine. But that 5.97 GB two hour MPEG2/2-ch audio clip issue still baffles me.

Sorry id I offended you - that was not my intention. Neither do I check peoples post count before replying. However, no matter how long someone has scoured the fields of VideoHelp, I do have a prejudice against people who uses Nero for what it's not (it's good at writing preformatted data to a writable media - Leave it at that), I immediately jump to the conclution that I'm dealing with a n00b.
As you've read all guides, how many of them suggests NVE as all that's needed for a succesful VCR to DVD transfer/conversion?
My suggestion to read guides was not to give you an answer to why Nero doesn't produce the expected output. I was merely trying to encourage you to use more apropriate tools.
    Case closed, yeah.

What the F@&# is with noobs & NVE lately ? j/k

I don't know how/what you're using to capture, but you might want to take a look at FulciLives' excellent guide for incorporating editing and noise removal from AVI sources. It is mainly for dealing with DV, but can be applied to any noisy sources, so long as you capture to AVI. You then drop the final AVS into your favorite MPEG encoder (mine is TMPGEnc) and let it do its thing. This guide is perfect for any TV or VHS caps.

BTW, if YOU had read all the guides, you would already know about this one
    If in doubt, Google it.

  6. No man, no offense taken. I used smileys for a reason Just saying I read through the various authoring guides and such and none explained the odd file size I was getting.

I was trying to use TMPGEnc before, but it wouldn't load the file, saying it wasn't valid. Nero read it fine, so that's what I stuck with. Nero may not be high end, but it got the job done for me. My Premier and Studio both like to crash, which I think has to do with SP2. I refused to install it for the longest time since my system was running flawlessly, but I decided to slipstream it last week and give it a try. Live and learn, I guess.

I haven't gotten to copying DVDs yet, just backing up some VHS cassettes for the time being with my capture card.

  7. Use DVDShrink or Nero Recode to transcode then burn.
