Linear PCM (LPCM?) or MPEG1-Layer II(MP2)...also CBR and VBR in both.
Which is the most compliant for a DVD? I've mostly dealt with existing AC3 audio on DVD's (making backups) but am now going to ambark on encoding from my DV camera with TMPGEnc Plus.

    Hello,
Well AC3 is the standard for DVD (at least in the US). However, I use a mpeg encoder card that captures in mpeg audio. I haven't had any problems with it in my older Sony dvd player. And since your back in forth between US and Europe I'd suggest mp2 since I've read that's more supported in Europe (just a guess not sure).

By all means, either choice SHOULD work just fine. And since they're both compressed audio space won't be a consideration for one or the other (just compatibility).

  3. I've heard the following are the most compiant in order of compliance

    AC3
    LPCM
    MPEG1L2

I've not had one problem with M1L2 audio streams in the 3 players I have .

    A consideration:

If you are using a Dolby Digital receiver for audio, MP2
audio won't be passed from the DVD player to the receiver
over the coax / optical link. MP2 audio will only appear on
    the L & R analog output jacks.

This means you need two sets of cables and need to switch
sources back and forth depending of where the DVD came
from. If you stick with AC3 on your authored DVDs you can
leave your receiver set to the digital input.

It looks as if as long as I don't go for the AC3 plugin on TMPGEnc DVD Author - then PCM would be the way to go since my first experiment with DV to PC to DVD is a lowly 1 hour tape and the size of the PCM audio should not be much of a problem.
I still like the idea of having AC3 on there though....Hmmm.
Thank You for the advise gentlemen....and if you have any more please feel free..

    Oh..almost forgot....CONSTANT Bit Rate? - also preferred?

Really, wow? I'll have to check that out on my setup at home. I've got the digital connection and some mp2 dvds. That's weird, I would have thought the signal would have transferred. Thanks for the info.

  7. You can setup some dvd players to convert mp2 to pcm before sending it to the digital output.
If you don't have this option then analogue is the way.

Not true.. it's totally dependent on the DVD player. My Toshiba DVD player quite happly sends the MP2 audio through it's optical link to my receiver.

However, I encode all audio to AC3 for maximum compatiblity as MP2 audio is not officially part of the DVD standard.
