  1. which format do commercial dvd movies use?

if they don't use neither, which one should i pick?

or should i select another format? in terms of quality and dvd player-compatibility, what's the number one format?

From the 'What is' for DVD to the left:

    (NTSC) Audio:

    "48000 Hz 32 - 1536 kbps
Up to 8 audio tracks containing DD (Dolby Digital/AC3), DTS, PCM(uncompressed audio), MPEG-1 Layer2. One audio track must have DD or PCM Audio."

PCM takes up a lot of space. I use AC3 or MPEG-1 Layer 2 sound.

AC3 is generally the most compatible.

MP2 can be trouble for some NTSC dvd players, like mine.

Use PCM if you have a concert, else use AC3.
