  1. I've been trying to put Closed Captions into a VCD, but I have absolutely no clue how to do it. I haven't been able to find any documentation on how it works or even the format the files are in. The closest I could find was a tool for making DVD captions out of .SCC files, but that doesn't help me much. I'd really like to put some captions into my VCDs. Does anybody have a link and/or info to help me out?

I don't think you have to kill anyone, but you do have to give tgpo a wedgie.

  5. Thanks, but that's for permanent subs, not Closed Captioning. Permanent subs are easy; what I'd like to do is encode actual, legitimate captions that can be decoded by a TV.

From what I've read, closed captioning isn't part of the VCD specs, even if I thingk there's another recent thread where someone mentioned that it is possible...

  8. Nope.

CC's are inserted on line 22 of the tv picture, that doesn't conform with vcd.

Make a dvd instead, way easier.

Then to put on CC's you need the CC card & software, around $1500 or more last time I looked. I read that Macs can do it without all that fancy stuff if you search the net for the free mac software.

  9. Then what are you supposed to do with the "CAPTnn.DAT" files that are listed in the VCD File Structure list?

Supposedly, yes VCDs do support closed captioning but they store the data totally different then a DVD. The captions are stored in the CAPTnn.DAT file but it is only readable by CDI players.

I've heard of commercial DVDs having closed captioning on them, and supposedly some hardware VCD recorders can record the captions off the tv broadcast. I've talked to someone who said they got the captioning to work on their CDI player using a commercial DVDs. I can't confirm any of this though.
