  1. Here's the Sony media that I've found so far:

    Sony +R 4x Made in Taiwan - RICOHJPNR01
    Sony +R 4x Made in Singapore - MCC 002

    Sony -R 4x Made in Taiwan - SONY04D1
    Sony -R 4x Made in Austria - SONY04D1
    Sony -R 4x Made in Singapore - MCC 01RG20

I can buy all of those at the same price. So, my question is:
    Which is better?

    Thanks.

All of those are compatible with MY burner. I think good advice would be to buy Singapore over Taiwan.

And Autstria??? Are you sure thats not a typo?

  4. im hearing that the dvd+r is better than the dvd-r.. but i havnt heard horror stories about the dvd-r either.

SONY Media is pretty good.. since i always use dvd-r (flame_on) I will probably pick up a dvd-r tomorrow, since either way is ok.

Is SONY media not made by the dreaded Lead Data?

Austria is a small wealthy Western European nation with an expensive labor force. they do do not have a large export electronics sector and especially not in fields like optical discs, motherboards, and other computer products. Those kinds of things, to my knowledge are made almost exclusively in East Asia and only recently South Asia. It is possibly that these discs were manufactured in Taiwan or Japan and shipped to Austria to be packaged and distributed, but I just can't imagine a large Optical Disc manufacturer, like Mitsubishi for example saying: "you know, we need to open a new plant to produce DVDRs, let's build it in Austria!".

What I mean by "typo" is that it may be a typographical error, or research error and that these discs were not made in, and probably have very little connection to Austria, the land of skiing, Mozart, and chocolate pastries.

Just thought I'd mention I saw SONY DVD-R 4x speed jewel case packs at COMPUSA that said "made in JAPAN". I don't know what the media code but I was thinking it could be TAIYO YUDEN or MXLG01 or MXLG02.

I bought a few 10-packs of Sony DVD-R 4X made in Japans when there were on sale at CompUSA. They turned out to be Taiyo Yuden.

And about the original question, based on what I've read in these forums, the MCC DVD's made in Singapore seem to be the most reliable for both +/-. Then the RICOHJPNR01.

But if the made in Japan DVD-R's are available, I would go with them first if prices were all the same.

  10. Thanks for the replies.

Here are the letters and numbers that I found in the DVDs:

    Sony +R 4x Made in Taiwan - RICOHJPNR01 (DO402A21415R)
    Sony +R 4x Made in Singapore - MCC 002 (ZC2904-DVR-W47B)

    Sony -R 4x Made in Taiwan - SONY04D1 (ARM5G4 D0073)+ (IFPI...)
    Sony -R 4x Made in Austria - SONY04D1 (ARM5G4 D0073) + (T06) + (in the center: IFPI94D3) + (some lines ||| || |||||| around the center)
    Sony -R 4x Made in Singapore - MCC 01RG20 (ZC6116-DVR-H47C)

What do you think about those?

You should first consider discs made in Singapore by Mitsubishi Chemical, they normally have better quality than those made in Taiwan and Austria. Actually grab those MCC discs as fast as you can since Sony has stopped using MCC as its OEM and Mitsubishi Chemical has switched its 4X disc production to Taiwan by CMC. Just my thought.
