  1. I have a protected (licensed) .wmv file, and I wanted to convert it to avi or mpg, but I get a msg saying that there is no video content in the file. I know it's licensed and protected, but how can I circumvent it? Or can I?

    Thanks

...Just like Video DVD's are CSS encoded "for a reason", and we talk about circumventing that protection 100s of times each day...

  5. The most annoying thing about DRM protected WMV's is that I can only play them in Windows Media Player, and I don't like Windows Media Player!!

Yes, but there is no fair use clause for WMV...
    If in doubt, Google it.

...and why shouldn't fair use be applied to WMV files when it can be to Video DVD? (Just curious - not trying to pick a fight!)

Probably because no-one has figured out how to circumvent it yet

If they have, they aren't sharing it

I think you would probably get the rental clause thrown at you though - as I understand it, the wmv licences are pay per view(s), not ownership of the material like buying a DVD.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I'm super new (call me Noobie McNoobster, if you wish), but couldn't someone theoreticly play the movie in question, and then capture it as it happens on screen? Or is there a wonder program like that out there? And if so, does it not work due to some M$ form of Macrovision?

Mind you, as per the no warez rule, I'm not advocating this. Just offering it as a hypothetical, to be bantered around, and eventuly come back to smack this beginner squarely in the noggin.

Thank you for your time, and your kind (hopefully) words at my first post!

    Captain Noobing,

Yes. I actually have a very complicated (yet simple) way to capture anything, but it's so brilliant (and against some of the rules) that I'll just keep it to myself.

I'm sure my friend has told me that you can capture whatever is on the screen using something like camtasia...I have never tried it though.
    If in doubt, Google it.
