    Hello

I was at BEST BUY just yesterday and noticed that they now carry (never saw them before) a 10-pack (in slim jewel cases) of Panasonic DVD-R discs which say IN HUGE BOLD LETTERS ON THE FRONT that they are MADE IN JAPAN.

Unfortunately the price was $24.99 for this 10-pack ... this is the same as the FUJI 10-pack which is Taiyo Yuden discs ... the best money can buy ... and the FUJI 10-pack uses full sized CD style jewel cases, not slim cases.

I'm curious though if these new Panasonic DVD-R discs are any good. I assume they are since they say MADE IN JAPAN ... makes me wonder if they are Taiyo Yuden even.

Anyone buy these yet and if so can you report on the MEDIA ID/CODE etc.?

When I bought my E50 they packed a DVD-RAM with it, and I bought 5 more, but they didn't include a DVD-R and I can't bring myself to pay what Panasonic is asking for them :P

The Panasonic DVD-R discs i buy here in the UK have the dvdinfo code Taiyo Yuden, they have been comming down in price. approx £1 a disc at Panasonics online shop. They come in the full sized jewel case. Never had or heard of others having problems with these discs.

Also use Verbatim 4x pastel discs, they come in slim jewel cases and they are Taiyo Yuden discs as well.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the Panasonic 4X media is Taiyo Yuden. They made their own 2X media which was also pretty good but nearly impossible to find anymore.

    Hi FulciLives,

Just an update for you, recieved a new batch of discs today, slightly different looking to the ones i've bought before, Panasonic 4x in slim jewel cases with Made in Japan just like the ones you have and they are TYG01 coded, so they are Taiyo Yuden discs, they look very similar to the Verbatim Pastel discs except they are all the same colour instead of the 5 colours that the pastel discs come in.

Yeah that's the package I saw when I was at BEST BUY

I thought it was funny how nice and big the MADE IN JAPAN was on the front.

Not like other brands where you have to squint to see the small letters on the back!

However I've found the FUJI 10-packs (which are Taiyo Yuden MADE IN JAPAN) at OfficeMax and CompUSA for only $19.99

So if you have to purchase retail store that is the way to go.

Otherwise RIMA.COM has Taiyo Yuden in bulk at the cheapest price.

Down to something like $1.15 each now and they been going down like 5 cents every week or so for a while so they might get even cheaper soon!

Damn...I was considering buying those Panasonics too, kinda glad I didn't at that price. I've been meaning to try out Taiyo Yuden's and it looks like the time and price are right now for 'em. I didn't pay much less for Ritek's and TY's reputation is much better, especially as of late. Anyone have much experience burning these TY's in an NEC ND-1300A?

$1.15? I'm paying $1.40 for Maxells now in bulk. Maybe I'll have to join Indo in the TY camp. I haven't seen them for less than $1.90 ea. in bulk recently.

I have a NEC ND-1300A and have been burning Taiyo Yuden and Maxell (MADE IN JAPAN) DVD-R media since day one.

    Never had a problem.

Recently I tried some Prodisc 4x DVD-R discs and had nothing but bad burns at 4x and even at 2x I get no READ ERRORS but the RPM SPEED TEST doesn't look so hot.

Some think it might be my system as per the Prodiscs not working well but all testing (read error and rpm speed tests) done with TY and MAXELL media have turned up flawless at 4x burning.

As I said in that post about Prodisc ... TY my dear I'm sorry I ever tried to find a cheaper Bitch :P

Ah great to hear you've had good luck with this drive on Taiyo Yudens. What firmware are you using? I'm still using 1.06 as it burns my Ritek's just fine, never saw a need to flash it to something newer.

  13. Meritline has Taiyo:
    25 for $59.75

    Are they really worth it?

  14. Again since it seems to have been missed above. RIMA.COM Has TY In 100 Bulkpack For $1.15 Each.

Maybe I am missing something but a lot of people seem to get very excited over some other brand selling these at a substantial mark up. I have seen nothing but massive positive feedback for Rima and their shipping on 100 discs is very low.
Still a few bugs in the system...

I have been using 1.09 for a while but during the Prodisc testing I upgrade to the newest which is 1.0B

I've only ever used the official NEC firmware upgrades for what it's worth.

I never had a problem with TY even back with 1.05 (which is the firmware my NEC ND-1300A came with) although I haven't burned any TY DVD-R discs since upgrading to 1.0B which I only did a few days ago or so.

Also as mentioned RIMA.COM has Taiyo Yuden in a 100 pack for $115.00 ($1.15 per disc) or in a 50 pack for $60.00 ($1.20 per disc). S&H is extra.
