I burned a SVCD using a mpeg 2 onto a regular cd. I used Nero 6 to burn the mpeg 2 file onto a cd. But when I burned the svcd I found out that I could only play it on the computer I burned it with. I could not play it in a dvd player either.

my dvd player can play burned vcd's. Do I need a mpeg-2 codec to play svcd's on my other older computers?

just like grimey said make sure that your dvd player can play svcd. svcd is different from vcd. your dvd player may be able to play vcd but not svcd...
download cyberlink powerdvd and install it on your old computer, it can play svcd in computer without problemhacking the Net using typewriter :D -

It may be possible in some DVD players that they don't support SVCD.
Look through this site, there is a tutorial on a 'VCD header trick'.
It tricks the player into thinking that it is playing a VCD and actually it is SVCD playing. As DVDs are MPEG-2 and so are SVCDs so all DVD players have capability to play SVCDs (but some manufacturers have not provided support for recognizing SVCDs) .
