  2. I'm sorry ... I usually don't respond this way but ....

    Your question is silly.

As good in what way? Compression ratio? Dual processor support? Lossless ? Free... as I recall, Morgan is not free.

My question to you is why?

No trevlac, you don't respond like this at all normally
    The question isn't silly....
...a new and probably inexperienced member has canvassed opinion on a codec, compared to one he/she has already tried and liked, but would prefer a freeware one (as we all would).
A fair question if you ask me.

    powrslave..........powerslave?
I've never found one I prefer to the PicVideo MJPEG but this isn't free.
Im my opinion you shouldn't skimp on the codec, it's integral to everything you're trying to do.
    By all means search.
You could try the huffyuv codec, it's free and superb but for me was too CPU intensive and produced too big a file size for which I felt wasn't worth the small gain in quality.

  5. OK thanks for the replies and for treating my post with such delicate ease.

I've read people complaining about morgan, but for me it has proven better than huffy.
Maybe I'm doing somethign wrong...but while using huffy I get stutter during the encode instantly...perhaps it doesn't like ogg in the mix...but anyway, morgan works fine.
It seems huffy is basically the de facto around here but hasn't done well for me.
    -BTW this is on a xp2000 w/ 768 megs > 200gig 8meg seagate.

I really wanted to start a big codec war but eh...

    Thanks for the link!

Sorry, you are right... Maybe I was just yelling at my kids, and a bit pissed when I said that.

PICVideo is easier (more clear options) and has less problems than Morgan for me. Not free, but close enough ($20 i think)

One thing to know about mjpeg vs huffyuv.... If you compress YUV source in mjpeg and request RGB back (like by using vdub or tmpgenc or just about any editor), you will not get the same black level as what huffyuv would give you. If you tell me your general process/tools, I will be more specific about what happens and what to do.

    BTW: I use PIC.

Edit since Will made me feel guilty, i went out and found you a link with a bunch of codecs. You would have to test to see what works for you, because it depends on what you want to do. Lead also makes mjpeg codecs and they are $10.

We'll see all of you next week...please stay tuned for your local news and weather.

OK thank...I'm going to try Huffy once again tonight.
I'm using virtual vcr capturing with my gf4 vid card VHS tapes.

    Still experimenting right now.
    Final output will be dvd.
So let me know what you think!

  9. well..i got some news and made an attemtp to try for free one lossless codec compressing in real time (seems better than HuffYUV !).
    http://www.alparysoft.com/prod/compression/index.php
lossless codecs seem not too good in compression as loss ones (MPEG, MJPEG..), but they say its new version will show visually lossless compression with brilliant compression ratio...we ll see
i'm not gonna test it now...anybody tried?? tell me if it's really worth trying? thanx
