Also, is any special hardware, besides a dvd rom drive, required to burn your own dvds? thanks for your time

Three things you'll need to start your back ups: DVD+/- RW for ripping and burning, latest DVD Shrink for ripping and shrink if need to, and the latest Nero for DVD burning. I've been using this for a long time and it worked 100% for me.
Its fast, easy and the result is high quality if you use DVD Shrink's reauthor mode and backup only the main movies, you'll get 80-100% quality most of the time...well drop the useless captions and useless audio channels too (DTS and other useless channel). Usually keep the English 5.1 channel or of sort. Good luck!
