    I would appreciate any suggestions on the best tool to convert mpeg files to avi files.

    He is right by saying VirtualDub. But if the file is Mpeg2 i would use DVD2AVIdg. Or you could use AVISYNTH to frameserve into VDUB.

    Try Pinnacle T-Rex. I tested it against Premiere 6.5 and Vegas 4. Without a doubt best output, sharpest, smothest, fastest, least color bleeding plus perfect audio sync. I'm using it for MPEG2 to DV Avi. Still impressed by it.
