How long go you guys think we have to wait, when Dual Layer DVD Burners that can burn up to 10GB will come into play? And how much longer are we gonna have to wait for the Dual layer dvd burner and 10 GB CDs prices to be as cheap as todays CD Burner and blank cd discs.

  2. under the current technology or T-Factor....

about 2 years before they are resonably priced.

Remember that CD tech was avail in '93 when Yamaha was the only gig in town.

Once we hit a certain point in DVD technology, writable that is, then we'll see the good stuff start to hit home.

The vast majority of DVD's are encrypted with CSS ( content scrambling system ). This is why you can not strip a given file off a DVD like you can a CD-Rom. You get protection read errors much like you would with a protected 3.5" disk.

DeCSS is the hack. It enables the decryption of the data off of the DVD. Of course this has nothing to do with the way the decryption of the DVD's Mpeg-2 file occurs.

The Dual Layer DVD is the main weapon that the industry has to fight pirating of DVD software. They ( DVD consortium ) are not going to allow the spread of Dual Layer burners anytime soon. Even though many of them manufacture burners, and could make fortunes doing so, the risk to the DVD format itself is too great.

Point is, don't expect a DVD-R or any other DVD recordable media that allows you more than 5 GB anytime soon. If we do get DVD recordable media larger than 5 GB, it's almost guaranteed to not work in a standard DVD player.

also, I may be wrong, but I have heard numerous times that it is impossible to "burn" a 2 layer DVD, especially DVD-DVD copy. They aren't burned like normal, and the technology behind it is only in the hands of DVD production companies, and they won't release it for consumer use.

  5. That point is true.....forget copying 2 layer or 5+gig movies for a long, long time.

However, if I ever wanted to copy a 2layer movie....it's pointless because I can go buy the movie chaper then the media itself!!

And not worry about any player compat problems.

  6. Dual layered burners do not exist yet.

I don't think that anybody has even designed one yet -- there are inherent technological challenges in doing it.

Furthermore, to copy a dual-layered DVD onto a hypothetical dual-layered medium (and have the resulting disc work), would require a replication of the PHYSICAL layout of the disc (one layer spirals out, the other spirals in). This is not a trivial thing to do and at present, definitely impossible.
