  1. Hello,

I've just sold my ADVC-100 (which worked great!) in order to upgrade to the
ADVC-300 due to it's filtering capabilities. I like the ability to work
with less compressed DV files (AVI) in editing and then do one final MPEG
conversion. However, I also have a need to convert a collection of about
300 analog live music videos directly to DVD, so I'm in the need for a
    seperate hardware MPEG box.

Buying both the MPEG PRO and the ADVC-300 would break my budget, so I've
ordered the ADS Instant DVD+DV. Here's my thought, and although I haven't
    tried it, it seems logical.

I'm thinking that I'll use the Instant DVD+DV to do direct MPEG conversion,
but linking the ADVC-300 between the analog source and the ADS box. I can
hook up my analog VCR to the ADVC-300, then by firewire into the ADS box,
then to my PC (via USB) My goal is to filter and do TBC to some older
analog video, but also go direct to MPEG.

The reason I wouldn't just buy the MPEG PRO is that when I do want to edit,
I do not want to recompress an already compressed MPEG file.

Logically it makes sense to me that the ADS box wouldn't care what signal
(improved by the Canopus box or not) it recieved through the firewire, as
long as it was DV. Both units have audio lock, and I'd be invested about
$750. vs. over $1000. with 2 Canopus boxes.

Please give your thoughts and opinions as you see fit.

    Thanks!

    Mike

Not to hi-jack the thread but you are the first person I've seen who has posted about actually owning a Canopus ADVC-300 and you had a Canopus ADVC-100 which makes you a great person for doing an in-depth review.

If you could start a new thread with some info about your feelings about the add-ons in the ADVC-300 vs the ADVC-100 that would be greatly appreciated not by just me but also by alot of other people.

As for your question ... if the ADS has a firewire input then it should work but you MAY run into a problem were the ADS might want to try to control the Canopus ADVC-300 and if so then that is probably a coin toss on it working or not.

  3. John,

Thanks for the input. I've actually sold my ADVC-100, but not yet ordered the ADVC-300. I have ordered the ADS box, but it's not here yet. I've posted this concern / question on this and Creative Cow. Depending on the response I get, I'll be probably investing in the ADVC-300. I can't imagine not being able to capture in a less compressed DV format such as AVI. I'll keep this list posted if I take the plunge!

Oh well seems like no one wants to "blow" the money that Canpous is asking for the ADVC-300 but considering it has a built-in TBC and 3D Y/C comb filter and DNR ... well it sure sounds worth it!

I'd have one now if not for lack of funds but I hope to geta big tax check this year (haven't calculated it yet though) so if I am right about the size of my tax refund then yeah I might have to get it myself

I am sure you read the specs for the various ADS product line.
http://www.adstech.com and are aware that the IDVD +dv captures analog as well as dv. All of the product line hardware encodes to mpg only.

I've read that vhs noise is amplified when converted to dv and it is better to go straight from analog to mpg

If you do get one of the ADS products, EXCEPT THE ADS USB INSTANDDVD-1, you will be very happy with it.
