I have a Malata DV Recorder and I have experienced many problems with most kind of media. I found and addendum to the manual that recommends using X8 and avoid all x16 and spindled CDRs, but I had problems with those too.
Any suggestion about specific brands or speeds?

lol, no spindled cds?
I've only had a cd scratched by sitting on a spindle once.
As for brands and speeds, it's useless to compare. Companies by cd-r's from the manufacturer, paint their name on it, and package it. No matter what name on the front, you have no idea what the cd-r inside is going to be like. It's not really fair to judge a brand unless you've had repeated bad experiences.
Of course, one can learn to avoid certain(cheap) brands if one is sure that they always use cheap manufacturers. For example, after a couple of bad imation spindles with different dye colors, I know I'm not buying any more of that, just to be on the safe side.
