  1. can someone please tell me what kind of audio i should be using to make a good sounding svcd ? I had to re-encode some audio recently to make it compatible with the svcd format and used mp3 but their is a slight hissing noise on playback, this was a conversion from ac3 audio. Any suggestions ? I am using tmpenc to encode the svcd.

    thanks

    From WHAT IS, top left:

    VCD:
    Audio:
    44100 Hz
    224 kbit/sec MPEG-1 Layer2

    SVCD:
    Audio:

    32 - 384 kbit/sec MPEG-1 Layer2 or MPEG2 Audio
with up to 2 Audio Tracks

  3. some players can't play (s)vcd discs with mp3 audio. some software can (i think) tho i'm not sure about that. i just know it is not the standard, and my dvd player does not play it, so i do not use it.

If it is being converted from AC3, i would suggest converting it to layer 2 @ 384kbps for the best possible sound on this format.

384 kbps audio for an SVCD is too high. It hogs too much bandwidth from the video. Besides, it's 2 channel and 192 kbps works very well for downmixed 5.1 audio to mp2.

  5. I get great sound from ac3 using this method:

1: extract audio with virtual dub and make sure the audio is named with .ac3 ending (audio.ac3)
2: open audio.ac3 file in HeadAC3he and save the file in .wav format. I don't mess with any of the options because I've found the defualt options work best for me. Just open the file and hit start.
3: use your "audio.wav" file as the audio input in TMPEG instead of letting TMPEG encode the audio directly from the movie

Before I used this method I was getting a lot of background noise after burning and audio sync problems but this cleared everything up.
