Currently, my Sony DRU 510a (firmware d) is installed in my Dell P3/1000 and working just fine on W2k. I'd like to take advantage of the much faster processor that I have in my Dell laptop (P4/3.06g). I have the USB drive enclosure ME-320 with USB 2.0 to IDE interface. Physically, I know that this combination will work.
It's the reality that I'd like to know about. What are my prospects for the drive working in the enclosure across the USB 2 interface? I'm not expecting any improvements in burn time (I already get 4x done in an average of 15 minutes), but I am expecting significant improvement in rip time using the laptop's DVD drive due to processor and drive speed, as well as the whole portability thing.
Comments and guidance are/is appreciated!

The only way that you are going to gain any improvement in rip time is if the DVD drive in your laptop is not locked (speed wise that is) and most are. The only internal drive that performs outstanding are those made by LiteOn. And in your case this is not an option for you. All you can do is try it and see, but don't be disappointed if the results are not what was expected.

According to Dell, the Hitachi LG HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4221N, which is what is in my laptop, is not speed locked in any way. Dell support says that they do not lock the read speed of any drive in their laptops or desktops.

He should be able to test rip time differences with the way things are now. Whether the enclosure works or not, the upside is it will only cost you $40 to find out and if it doesn't you could still use the enclosure for a hard drive and that could come in handy.
