Why use the VFAPI virtual avi coder if it really degrades the quality of digital video? I've used it once for making VCDs, but after I encode the video to MPEG after using VFAPI, the video looks awful. I'm pretty certain that i'm using the coder correctly, but if i'm not, would someone please explain the proper use of it. I can see it's practical use for SVCDs because of such a high bit rate, but almost definitely not for standard VCDs. Help on this subject would be appreciated.

  2. VFAPI has no effect on quality at all..it simple wraps header information around the file to make it appear to be an .avi file..that is all....if your video is looking crappy, then there is somethng you are doing wrong in the encode or frame serving process that is causing this...unless your source video is crappy to begin with...the old saying goes "crap in equals crap out"

GIGO = Garbage In Garbage Out

It's true VFAPI does not affect quality at all.
It's either the settings you used/using or the actual original video. Nothing related to the actual 'fake avi'.

  4. while every one is talking about vfapi.... with tmpgnc if I have a *.avi encoded with the intel indeo. tmpgnc wont do anything with it. only a black screen. Does this have any thing to do with the vfapi not being able to read that codec? the only codec i can have it read is the windows video 1 codec the intel codec works better and I would like to read that one. If anyone knows why this is or knows a fix let me know thanks.
