  1. Hi there,

Yesterday I rented a dvd from blockbuster but when i put it in my computer it wouldnt play. Both Power DVD and Media Player gave me an error (Unsupported Format). I tried resintalling Power DVD but it made no diffference. I tried one of my older dvd's to check and it plays perfectly (as it always did) so i got another recent dvd i had and stuck it in the computer... same problem Is it possible that some dvd's have been somehow protected against working on computers? If so, is it possible to get around it?

    Cheers

No way, not yet. There is a prob with your system for sure.

Are you sure that you are using a DVD drive and not a CD-ROM?

Just curious. What movies did you try?

I had something like that happen to me - I rented Final Fantasy, and PowerDVD wouldn't play it. It kept pulling up an error message saying something about the movie was not a valid format, but it must have been, because it was a commercial DVD. I ended up using WinDVD, and it played just fine. And all of my other DVDs play fine through PowerDVD, it was just that one. My suggestion would be to try another player, if you can.

A friend of mine at work had burned some DVDs at home. None of the would play in Power DVD, but they would all play in Win DVD. Apparently, many software DVD players for PCs are just as picky about media, etc. as standalone DVD players sometimes are.
Fortunately, DVD players for your PC are mostly free. Just download a different one and try it.
