  1. I recently bought a DVD and I don't have a DVD burner so I would like to back the movie up to SVCD and was just wondering if anyone has successfully done so. It's approx. 2h15m...no longer than that. I just want the main movie on a 2 disc SVCD set at good quality.
I was wondering if maybe someone could give me good settings or a template to use with TMPGEnc. Thanks very much in advance for any help...it is greatly appreciated.

  2. I would suggest using DVD2SVCD with TMPGEnc. It does all the bitrate calculations and even splits and creates the SVCD images

  3. 2h15m on 2CD's in SVCD. Quality will be pretty poor. You might want to take a look at some of the work Kwag has done on getting more out of the various (S)VCD formats. His stuff can be found at www.kvcd.net.

This is not an endorsement, just a suggestion.

  4. I agree, for a movie that long you should use 3 CD's

That comes out to around 70min/disc, which really is stretching for SVCD. But at the same time you should consider the material you're encoding, I've put over 70 minutes on a CD before without any noticable artifacts on a 27in TV (using 2-pass VBR). Widescreen (especially things like 2.35:1) compresses well because you have all that black letterboxing, FILM material compresses better than NTSC or PAL, low action compresses better than lots of explosions, etc.
