The problem is that Codec packs also contain a lot of stuff that conflicts with each other, etc. etc.

    Sorry.

I've used ace codec pack for sometime. It allows you to install one at a time or all at once. I've never had any problems with it.

  4. I have seen people have major problems with codec packs ingeneral, not to indict all of them at once. I find it helpful to install codecs one-by-one, it helps to familiarize yourself with how they work, where they reside, etc.

Here is a list I had compiled some time back, I've made an effort to bring it up to date:

    Ogg Directshow filters - http://tobias.everwicked.com/oggds.htm

    XCD Filter - www.doom9.org

    Riff CD/XA filter - www.doom9.org

    Huffyuv - http://math.berkeley.edu/~benrg/huffyuv.html

    DivX 5 - http://www.divx.com/divx/

    DivX 3.11 - http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divxcodec.html (Like I said, I didn't need this to play DivX 3 files, just DivX 5)

Mpeg2 - http://www.elecard.com/products/mpeg2decoder.shtml (If you don't have a hardware MPEG2 decoder and if you don't have or don't want to use PowerDVD or WinDVD)

    AC3 filter - http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/

    Xvid codec - http://www.divx-digest.com/software/xvid.html

    DivX Antifreeze -
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/antifreeze_filter.html (Only necessary if you have problems with the video playback in certain Divx files locking while the sound continues)

Ffdshow - wonderful decoder that can decode almost anything, form DivX 3 on up to DivX 5 and XviD. MPEG support is spotty at best and not recommended. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND INSTALLING THIS

Latest Windows Media Codecs - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/default.asp

    VobSub - http://gabest.org/

    Quicktime Alternative - www.freecodecs.com

    Real Alternative - www.freecodecs.com

This is about as simple as I can make it without using a codec package like Nimo, which always invlove risks.
