hi! if anyone can help me out id REALLY appreciate it! ill be as detailed as possible.
what i did first was after dling nero express software and noticing that it would encode before burning a vcd i decided to try burning a vcd straight from avi with nero express. the results were working audio and video, but the video was real bad.
so i decided to change my avi file into an mpeg using tmpge before attempting to burn it again with my nero express. i did this with two different avi files, one a pal file and the other an ntsc file.
here are the settings for the tmpge i put for the pal avi file:
VIDEO SETTINGS
SIZE: 352x288 pixels
ASPECT RATIO: 4:3 PAL
FRAME RATE: 25FPS
CONSTANT BITRATE at 1150 kbit/sec
MOTION SEARCH ACCURACY: highest quality
ADVANCED SETTINGS
VIDEO SOURCE TYPE: non interlaced
FIELD ORDER: even field first (field order A)
SOURCE ASPECT RATIO: 4:3 PAL
IMAGE POSITIONING METHOD: full screen
here are the settings for the tmpge i put for the ntsc avi file:
VIDEO SETTINGS
SIZE: 352x240 pixels
ASPECT RATIO: 4:3 NTSC
FRAME RATE: 29.97FPS
CONSTANT BITRATE at 1150 kbit/sec
MOTION SEARCH ACCURACY: highest quality
ADVANCED SETTINGS
VIDEO SOURCE TYPE: non interlaced
FIELD ORDER: even field first (field order A)
SOURCE ASPECT RATIO: 4:3 NTSC
IMAGE POSITIONING METHOD: full screen
before burning the cd, in both cases, i played my mpeg to see if both video and audio worked, in which they did. however, after the cd was burnt it would play in my dvd player, that also plays cd-r. however, ONLY the audio would work and there was no video at all, just a black screen.
i also tried changing the preferences on the dvd player to ntsc and pal video accordingly but that did not work either.
i feel ive encoded my avi files correctly with the right settings, and the strange thing is as i mentioned at the beginning when i burned by vcd straight from the avi file through nero express, both video and audio worked, just the video was really unclear.
sorry for the long post, but im hoping that my detailed post would help pin point the problem. im very confused and any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

did you burn the mpeg as a data disc or did you burn it as a vcd disk?
second of all most computers will not play vcds unless you have a vcd player installed. subhash vcd player is one but there are many more -
thanks secretagent for the reply post! i did burn the mpeg as a vcd disk. and i didnt try to play it on my computer, i played it on a dvd player thats hooked up to my tv. its a digix and it lists that it plays dvd, cd, mp-3, cd-r, cd-rw and ive also tried it on another one, a mintek dvd player. please continue to reply to my post, im hoping to solve this problem. thanks!

just some suggestions first:
for your PAL .avi file....your video settings should still be 4:3 NTSC (like for your NTSC .avi file) if you plan on watching it on a 4:3 NTSC TV....the source is irrelavant because these settings are for OUTPUT VIDEO...not SOURCE
for motion search accuracy, choose high quality (slow) instead of highest quality (slowest) because the increase in quality isn't worth the extra increase in encoding time. high quality (slow) has the best quality:encode time ratio.

check out your dvd player here: https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers
make sure it can play VCDs. also, check to see if it can play xVCDs as well.
btw, try to play your VCD on your computer and c if it works. also, try to play your VCD on a friend's dvd player and c it it works. -
gracias poopyhead! well, im going to try what you suggested and im going to run my pal through tmpge with 4:3 NTSC, and burn it and see what happens. ill let you know.
but just a question...what about the NTSC avi file that i changed into an mpeg through tmpge with the 4:3 NTSC setting, wouldnt that have worked?
ive also checked my dvd player as you recommended. this is the results for my digix player: https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDnameid=2286&Search=Search&#comments and it does support both VCDs and XVCDS
this is my mintek dvd player: https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=mintek&cdr=1&cdrw=1&vcd=1&xvcd=1&Search=Search and it also supports both VCDs and XVCDs
i also tried your suggestion of playing it on my computer with the dat file but it appears as it does when i play it on my dvd player, no video and working audio.
im pretty sure the problem isnt the player but probably the method as to which im burning my vcds.
please continue posting! thanks again!

weird...it has to be the way the VCDs are burned then....
how fast you burning??? have you tried burning at max 4X??
btw, what's your audio bitrate??? VCD standard is 224 kbit/s MPEG-1 Layer II Audio. also, did you downsample your audio from 48 KHz to 44.1 KHz??? all this can be done with tmpgenc...look in your "audio" tab...
--------
those suggestions i told you were not to fix your audio problem...it's just for general... -
thanks again! i usually burn my vcds at 2x so ill try 4x this time. ive since, deleted the mpeg i created so i dont remember what i put in the audio settings. right now im running the avi file through tmpge with the following settings:
VIDEO
SIZE: 352x240 pixels
ASPECT RATIO: 4:3 ntsc
FRAME RATE: 29.97 fps
BITRATE: 1200 kbits/sec
ADVANCED
SOURCE ASPECT RATIO: 4:3 NTSC
VIDEO ARANGE METHOD: full screen
AUDIO
SAMPLING FREQUENCY: 44100 Hz
CHANNEL MODE: STEREO
BITRATE: 224 kbits/sec
when im done ill try burning it with 4x as you suggested. ill keep you updated. thanks a ton!

well i tried to burn the vcd with the specifications listed in my previous post, and still the vcd is just a black screen with working audio. its not just a plain black screen but it looks like its got some lines appearing here and there, so it seems like my burner attempted to burn the video? well im just about ready to give up cause i cant figure out what the problem could be. ive even tried using virtual dub to extract the audio and used winamp to create a seperate audio wav file with nullsoft disk writer plug in; and then putting the avi and the wav file i created with tmpeg to make an mpeg...but that didnt work either...im at a total loss.
but any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thanks!
