  1. I'm trying to play SVCD's on a Pioneer 333 DVD. I've tried a couple of different encoders and they all either make a stretched image, or a unzoomed image (wide bars all the way around the image).

    I've ripped the DVD with SmartRipper. Then tried both bbmpeg and tmpgenc (versions 12.0 12e 12h).

    bbmpeg always makes a streched image.

    tmpgenc makes a small postage stamp size image.

    This is a NTSC encode.

  2. make sure you also are choosing the correct aspect ratios for both source and output.

    as for the problem of the ~10% vertical stretch:
    the problem is likely incorrect SDE tags in the MPEG headers. you can fix this in two ways. first, open your TMPG template (NTSC SVCD.mcf) as a text file. change the lines named
    MPEG.Display.Height = 480
    MPEG.Display.Width = 480
    (the names should be pretty close to that if not exactly)
    there's a program called "fix12c.exe" that can also be used from the command line to parse existing MPEGs to fix them. search the forums, i know i posted the link, i just can't find it now. i think i also posted it on guiguy.wminds.com as a suggestion for the next thing to make a GUI for. the syntax

    fix12c "C:\filename.mpg" -h 480 -v 480

    (the pioneer players respect these display parameters, whereas many players don't, so some players will just scale whatever they're given to full screen and it'll show ok).

    when encoding, a 480x480 capture should be set to 1:1 source aspect, and 4:3 output aspect. choose "full screen" w/o the 'preserve aspect' in TMPG

  3. OK - getting close. Im using version H of TMPGenc, which I think fixed the problem of the SDE tags. But I updated the template with the two lines at 480 and its still stretched.

    At least now its full size, or bigger than the previous stretched version. The 1:1 source aspect, and 4:3 output aspect. choose "full screen" w/o the 'preserve aspect' did the trick to make the image bigger.

  4. Maybe its something in Flask - im on version 6 preview.

    BTW - the video source is 4:3 fullscreen - concert video from a DVD.

  5. you're not resizing in flask, are you? (and sorry, i assumed this was a captured 480x480 source, if it's from a DVD it should prob have the 4:3 ratio). TMPG will do the resizing for you. try the "show at center" option.

    use a bunch of different settings for 10 second clips, burn them to a cd-rw, and see which one works. run them all through the fix12c anyhow, it won't hurt anything. in fact, if you do

    fix12c "D:\filename" -h 704 -v 480 -s

    (-s makes an extra copy) on some and see what results you get comparing the 480x480 SDE and 704x480. on my 343 & 525, i used to get the 2/3 1/3 double picture at the high SDE, but it may work differently on the 333, though i'd doubt it.

  6. thanks - i ran the bbtools bbvinfo on the video stream, and both SDE fields are set at 480x480, so maybe you're right and its the Flask settings.
