Okay. Here is my situation. Trying to author a DVD from client footage. To this point all the footage supplied to me has been quicktime .mov files in sorenson 3 compression. My latest batch of footage is from what we can tell the same compression codec. It will work on my client's machine, but I get an error when trying to open it up in quick time: "couldn't open the file, because it is not a format quick time understands" I've had the client reburn me a copy, but still getting the same error. I've tried opening this file in premiere, aftereffects and media player, all with the same result. There is a possibility it could be encoded differently, but I am unable to confirm which codec is being used. Is there a way to analyze the .mov file to find out which codec it's using, or is there any way to force a program to read the file (i.e. changing file ext to .dat such as a VCD file can be played by Media Player)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. So far, the only thing I can think is to have the client re-encoding with a different codec, then having him burn yet another copy (which unfortunately could take weeks)?

Try using AVICodec, or GSpot in the TOOLS section. They should report what codec was used to encode the file.
