I have read of the "header" trick, where you remux SVCD as VCD, so you can burn as VCD and play on DVD players that won't play SVCD.

But what I'm talking about here is the reverse...remuxing VCD as SVCD.

Why do I want to do this? Well, I have many SVCD's that are about 550 Mb, but no SVCD's that are about 250 Mb, and I want to maximize the use of my blank CD's. I do, however, have several VCD files that are in the 250 Mb range. By remuxing them and burning as SVCD, I can fill up my discs! I tried this, and it appeared to work just fine (though VCDEasy of course complained about the resolution). I did not notice any loss of quality in the remuxed video.

Does anyone else do this? Are there any problems with this? I like to use TMPGEnc's tools to do the remuxing since it is so fast and easy to use.

just create a svcd (mpeg2) with a lower bitrate if you go under 1400 then lower the res. from 480x480 to 352x240.........if you go under 1400 bitrate with a 480x480 res. you may get a lot of block noise!

i would not bother with the header change....the whole purpose of that is so you can play mpeg2 videos [(svcd) which has a better picture quality then mpeg1 (vcd) ] on non complaint player............if you are gonna make the player think its playing a svcd might as well just make one with lower setting this way you can still keep the mpeg2 video

I'm not making the videos, I'm just downloading them...mostly capped TV episodes which have already been converted to MPEG. High quality SVCD's of a half hour show is about 550 Mb, while low quality VCD's of a half hour show are about 250 Mb. Thus, I can fit two episodes on a CD if:

    1. I remux the VCD as SVCD

    or

    2. I remux the SVCD as VCD

I just figured it would be quicker to remux the 250 Mb VCD than it would to remux the 550 Mb SVCD....

I'm not sure if there are any other pros or cons to the two choices I have.

ahh... okay, i see what you're doing.....i guess if you really wanted to waste time you could re-encode you svcd's to 'low quality ' svcd and put
    3 x 250 on a cd instead of the 1x 550 and 1x250
