  1. I'm encoding a TV show that is telecined. Everything I've read says I'll get better results if the material is inverse telecined before encoding. Is this possible in Vegas Video 4?

Wow, Michelle, you are pretty cute

But on to business ..... I will pass on to you what little bit I do know. Before Inverse Telecining, you have to make sure that the original was in fact film or 24 fps in its original format. If it is then go for it. But your real question was can Vegas get it done. Truthfully, I dont know. Maybe try your help menu in Vegas and see if it has that capability. I too have Vegas 3, but never used it for telecine issues. I always used Virtualdub.

B TW...... do you have a boyfriend? ............ just kidding

  3. Can you frameserve from Vdub to Vegas? I tried it and it didn't work. Do you do a pulldown after encoding?

    Michelle,

I believe I recently saw a post on this site for a "downloadable" tool that allows you to frameserve from Vdub to Premiere and Vegas. Do a quick search on this site.

Incidentally, when I used Virtualdub to do my IVTC, I served to TMPG for encoding.

vegas can not inverse telicine on its own ...

the plug-in for for frame serving OUT of vegas is here : http://www.debugmode.com/pluginpac/frameserver.php

to frame serve from v-dub to vegas -- create vdr file and load vdr into vfapi convertor and create a fake avi -- load that into vegas - not the vdr file ..

you may also may have better results (remember to upgrade to vegas 4.0c anyway) to encode to 24p in vegas and use external pulldownGUI (found in tools at left) to re-write header ... i seem to get a better quality , but it may be my dreams ..

So you encode to 24p instead of doing inverse telecine? This stuff is complicated.

no -- you will have to inverse telecine first .. it is prob. easer to do this in TMPGenc (and frame serve out of it to vegas)than in v-dub upon reflection , but can be done in both v-dub and tmpgenc pretty easy ..
you can also use AVIutil (slow but does pretty good job) ..

to do it in tmpgenc , follow this guide http://www.inmatrix.com/articles/ivtc1.shtml

skip parts 1 and 2 and just load your source into tmpgenc , stop at the point in guide where it says "Encoding the video, The First Pass" and at that point you would then save project file , load project file into vfapi convertor and create fake avi - > load fake avi into Vegas ... this really all takes but a few seconds .

to do it in v-dub (virtual dub) , load source into v-dub , video tab -> frame rate -> click reconstruct from fields adaptive or there are other ways to do it .. make sure full proccessing is selected and start frame server and load the resulting vdr file into vfapi and and create fake avi -> load fake avi into vegas and you are good to go . this method which i dont use i believe works better to acually render a new avi (using for example the main concept dv codec or better huffyuv codec (if you have the room) ). this method works very well

to do it in AVIutil see guide here http://arbor.ee.ntu.edu.tw/~jackei/dvd2avi/ivtc/

there is also a guide on how to do it more completly with tmpgenc than the short method i said above on this site (i just noticed)..

NO automatic method is 100% perfect .. so be aware .. it is not the always the easiest thing in the world to have perfect results the first time ,,, but you may be lucky ...

btw -- is that your picture ? you are cute then ..

i should mention also that i greatly recomend using virtual dub mod instead of normal virtual dub ...

that way i can if nessessary control color space and also load mpeg files directly into virtual dub and a few other reasons i dont remember right now ..

dvd2avi is also a good tool to have around ..

vfapi convertor comes with tmpgenc or its on the tools area also .. for some reason for ages i have been using the japan version of it ..
