  1. Thanks to vcdhelp.com comparissoncharts I consider buying a Matrox Marvel G400 - TV card. It will be my first step in videocapturing.
    I have a P II 350 with 128 MB on an Asus P2B board with 440BX chipset (all dated from 1998 ).

As I understand the G400 - TV should run just fine on my system (?).

There is one point that is troubling my mind: the 2 GB AVI capture limit for Windows.

Is there any solution covering this problem. As I was comparing with Pinnacle Studio DC10+, I discovered on their website a software update that fixes the 2 GB limit (: http://www.pinnaclesys.com/support/display.asp?FileID=577&ProductID=307).

I'm told about the marvelous rock solid support Matrox offers. So I hope there is a fix. Does anybody know?

After that nothing can stop me from buying it , true?

  2. The 2 gig limit applies to any standard AVI.
Having said that, both VirtualDub and AVI_IO can do what are called multi segment captures. They simply finish one file and start another in a numerical sequence on the next frame so you don't get any frame drops this way.
Then you use VirtualDub to edit your capture. It sees the multi segment capture as a single file. You can then save it as an edited multi segment output or frameserv it direct to your encoder.
Either way, you don't need to worry about the 2 gig limit.

By the way, I've got a Matrox G400 TV. The statements above are exactly what I do.

    Hope this answers your question.

  3. Ian,

Thanks for your advise. In the meantime I've bought the Marvel G400 TV. It's up and running .

I also downloaded AVI_IO and that looks fine too.

Starting my capture career now I have another question about the best way to make SVCD of VCD out of analoge Hi8 tapes, but I will post it seperately.

Thanks again for your good help.
