    How do I put subtitles onto the mpeg files that I encoded from vob(dvd)files?

    You would use VirtualDub, and the subtitle plugin, Sub Station Alpha. All the relevant info for that is to the left, under "Edit" in the green, "How To:" section (aren't those convenient? )

    And if you wanted to use the subtitles from the DVD VOBs, that info is there too.
