  1. Hello Folks!
I have a bunch of Hi8 analog footage that I wish to convert to DV. I have 2 camcorders, a Hi8 and a D8 (both by Sony) and my capture card is a Canopus ADVC-1394.
Question: What should give me better quality:
    1) Play the Hi8 tape with the Hi8 camcorder and let the Canopus create the DV file, or
    2) Play the Hi8 tape with the D8 camcorder and just transfer the resulting DV file to my computer hard drive via the firewire?
    Best Regards,
    Michel

I doubt you will see much difference. Any difference would be related to the difference between the sony dv codec and the canopus dv codec. I'm not sure which is better - I never could see a difference.

Without good patch cables you may introduce some noise hooking the Hi8 camcorder to the canopus card. There may be some advantage playing the Hi8 tape and converting to dv in the same unit.

I don't think you gain anything by playing back a sony recorded Hi8 tape on a sony D8 camcorder. I actually had a problems with a sony d8 deck playing back Video 8 tapes recorded on a sony camcorder whereas Video 8 tapes recorded on a canon camcorder worked fine.

Unless you want to test which method looks better, I would do what is most convenient.
