I am trying to take movies directly off the satellite and put them onto CD dics that will work in my DVD player. I have managed to save good samples a few minutes long and they turn out fair. My main problem now is that when I take the MPEG2 file and cut it to a 1 hour length it is still too large to burn onto a 700MG disc. The file is about 1,300,000. How can I get these to the correct size so a movie of 2 hours will fit onto 2 dics.
I am saving at MPEG2 480x480 NTSC (525) tried several bit rates.
If anyone has an answer, please let me know. This is getting frustrating, as I been trying to do this for several days.
Thanks

Thanks for the link wee haggis, but I am realy green at this and havn't a clue what I need from all the options. Can you give me a bit more advise.
Thanks,

These templates I suggested are for an enocder called TMPGE.
First thing we have to know is,what are you capturing the video with?
Is it listed here:
http://www.vcdhelp.com/capture#video
I'm no expert at capturing from satelite ,but I can tell you that if you want to encode it using one of the Templates for TMPGE ,read here:
http://www.vcdhelp.com/tmpgencsvcd.htm
and here:

Wee haggis, thanks for the info. I am using the software that came with my ATI AIW card. It is TV7.6 and Video6. The last one i captured did about 18 minutes and cut out. I had it set to time at 1 hour record. It used up 80,000 mb to capture at 480x480 Mpeg2, 6vbs. I used Nero to write it to the CD disc (SVCD) without doing any changes and it is fair but the sound is out of sync. Maybe there is some other way to do this that will give better results and I can save an hour movie that will fit on one disc.
Any advise would be appreciated as I don't have a clue what I'm doing except wasting a lot of time.
Thanks,

I do know, however that your file size would not be 80,000mb (80gig)?
Maybe 80mb or 800 ? for 18 minutes?
Do you have to save it using that software?
Does it have to be MPEG2?
If you are going to save it as a data file (to be played on your compuer but not on a DVD) then, you can make some real nice captures (I'm sure ) with good compression and quality using this:
http://www.vcdhelp.com/divxcap.htm
or if you want to try another method of MPEG2 (after initail transfer to AVI:

Yes I guess your right. The file size is KB not MB.
I have managed to save one for 1 hr and 30 min. and the file size is only 710,000KB and I burnt it onto a cd with Nero. It all fit OK but the quallity is jus so so and the sound is all out of kilter. Do I use the TMPEG top fix the sound? What I have read it looks like I do mutiplex or something like that.

If your file was in AVi format you could use this method of extracting the audio and using as the audio source in TMPGE encoding:
http://www.vcdhelp.com/virtualdubaudio.htm
you can also do this to adjust audio / video sync after encoding
(if constant out of sync):
http://www.vcdhelp.com/sync.htm
and ...this if gradual out of sync:
http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/userguides/78944.php
When i convert from AVI to MPEG using TMPGE ....I ALWAYS use an extracted WAV file as the audio source (as per suggestion #1).
After 200 VCD/SVCD conversions and counting,it has'nt failed me yet in producing an in sync end product.
TMPGE does have an option to adjust the audio during encoding:
Set up video as normal in TMPGE ,then >

Thanks wee haggis. I got a computer bug so I have to format. Will get back in a day or 2.
RBM227 -
Wee haggis, I am back after formatting my C drive and a lot of work reinstalling everything. I finnaly got a few movie clips that turned out so so. I used mpeg1, 480x480 NTSC(525) at 2.45m Bit/second, then used TMPEG to split and convert to Mpeg2 with audio at O dif . I used nero then to write to the disc and it will give me a good size file that will store 1 hr per disc or more. I only did a movie with 1 and a half hour and it had lots of extra space on both discs.
I am now trying to download off the net to see if it is better quality video. The one I chose to download was in AVI format and when I try to use TMPGE to convert to MPEG it wouldn't open it?
Do you have any thoughts as to why, or what do I need to get it to open?
Thanks,
RBM227 -
If you have'nt already ...you' probably need to download the codecs either from divx of the Nimo codec pack.

Assuming you're trying to make an SVCD (480 x480) why don't you just figure out the correct bitrate for one hour of video to fit on a CD and capture the video with the AIW then author?
For 1 hour the bitrate should be about 1540 Kbps.
But if you want to do it the hard way (the way you're doing it now), you should make the initial capture in Mpeg2 instead of mpeg1 and use a higher bitrate so that when you do the conversion you have a high quality source file; 4 - 5 Mbps should suffice.
When all else fails RTFG, that's waht they're there for. -
Furball, I'm trying to figure this out and have been trying all sorts of combinations. I even tried the mpeg2 like you said but without running the TMPG on it the sound was out of whack. I will try the Mpeg2 again to see if I can get a better picture using your suggested bit rate.
I am realy new at this and appreciate the help. I don't even know what you mean by "Author" it.
Thanks

I'm not much of an svcd guy myself, but I think the audio needs to be 48Khz, this could be why it is out of sync.
I've also experienced audio sync problems with certain applications creating the vcd and causing the sync problems.
There are plenty of guides here.

Thanks Furball for the help. I will keep working on it. Goto go Curling now.

I know your not going to want to hear this but, capturing to SVCD majorly sucks.
'Ideally' you should capture to Huffyuz or MJPEG. This will run 10-20 GB (with a G) per hour for Huffyuv and 8-15 GB/hour for MJPEG. You take the result, trim out what you don't want in VDUB, filter as needed, and frameserve it to TMPGenc. You can open it directly in TMPGEnc (PCM audio and mjpeg open fine for me) if you don't need to trim it. In TMPGenc you decide whether you want it to fit on 1 CD or 2, this will tell you what the average bitrate needs to be. You then use whatever template you need, put in some bitrate values and encode it. Burn when finished. Results can be spectacular with a sattelite source!
The alternative is to capture in SVCD ready-to-burn resolution, and have a mediocre-to-poor result. To get nice results, you have to capture in bitrates higher than the SVCD standard. This is becasue capturing is a 1-pass constant bitrate encode. Whereas DVD ripped SVCD's are invariably multi-pass encodes.
See any of the dozen guides on capturing and/or encoding SVCD.To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
Thanks Gazorgan for your input. I would like to get the spectacular results you talk about and maybe I can if I keep at it. I have captured some in the Mpeg1 and 2 format but am not pleased with the results. These open fine in TMPGE. The one I downloaded from the internet in AVI will not open and I right clicked on the codec 3.1 or whatever it is to load to my computer. It put a file in that is just an internet link or something. It didn't do an install when I opened it up. I haven't a clue about some of this. I am use to doing downloads and installs but this has me baffled. If there was a step by step I'm sure it would be simple but I guess I just have to keep doing trial and error till I get things to work.
RBM227 -
I downloaded and installed the codec5.0 but can't find the DIVXcodec3.11 and 4.
If someone has them on the computer perhaps they could email me them of installing.
Thanks,
