  1. I am ready to start converting my analoge Hi8 camcorder tapes on to disc using the Adaptec (Mpeg 2)avc 2000 PCI card. I also have a DVD burner. With the Hi8 basically a svhs set up would I gain any benfit if I convert to DVD standard or should I use SVCD?

  2. I have over 80+ miniDV tapes I plan on converting. I was going with SVCD but to achieve equal quality I needed a bitrate that only allowed 30mins per 800MB SVCD. So I'm going with DVD (waiting on dvd burner) and playing to fit 2 or 3 miniDV tapes on one DVD. I didn't want 160 SVCDs.

  3. Do you know what the quality differance would be if I was to capture from HI8 to SVCD instead of Hi8 to DVD, would I benifit from recording DVD as the source is only Hi8 not DVD!

For HI8 (home movies), I suggest 1/2 D1 DVD with an average bitrate of 3500kb/s and multipass VBR encoding method.
The alternative is a xCVD with the same bitrate

I agree with SatStorm, higher resolutions do not offer quality improvments.
