This site provides an extensive set of HOW TOs, that can be accessed from the left menu. If you take a look under CONVERT, I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for!

If you wrote this correctly, you cannot take a divx to burn directly to a VCD or SVCD (unless you reencode it to VCD or SVCD format first)

If you meant to say that you cant use nero to burn the DIVX to play on your computer, then all you need to do is burn the divx file as a data CD and it will play on your PC-CDROM (there are a few dvd players that will play divx now).

If you are wanting to convert DVD to VCD/SVCD(CVD), you can use some all in one products like DVD2VCD or DVD2SVCD(which is actually CVD).

And the earlier post was correct, there are a number of help guides on this site that will tell you how to capture, rip, convert, author and burn your movie file from various formats to various formats.

Regular VCD is MPEG1, SVCD is MPEG2, so you definitely need a different format and codec.

I think most would recommend TMPGEnc for MPEG1, as it's free, not too slow, and produces mpegs of excellent quality. It comes with a time limited MPEG2 encoding option too.

For ripping software, take a look at doom9.

  9. the site to download DVD2SVCD is http://www.dvd2svcd.org/

The only other software that you will need on your system is either TMPGENC or CCE(Cinema Craft Encoder). For compatibility issues, you will want CCE v2.50. The site also has a how to guide to give you basic settings. I believe that one of the forum members, Baker, has a VERY EASY to use guide with pictures. His settings for 95% of the movies that a person will do will look great! The only ones that don't look so hot are older cartoons and pre 1960'ish movies and that is due to the source video.
For those types of films, I go a different route and don't use DVD2SVCD (I have done only one -so it may be just my luck on that one video- with DVD2SVCD and the audio was out of sync, which was the way I ripped it with DVD2SVCD). Basically I use CladXP 1.3 and frameserve(fancy way of saying that I create a fake file that another encoder can use to convert) it to TMPGENC. I have found (as another poster said) that TMGENC does a better job of encoding MPEG-1(VCD) than CCE does. Anyway, after I frameserve it, I use TMPGENC with standard VCD template and encode it to VCD format.

If you are just wanting to do straight DVD rips to VCD format, you can use http://www.eazyvcd.tk/

If you are wanting to rip a DVD to DVD(R), you can use http://www.dvd2dvd-r.de/index.php

All of these applications (and much more) are located on the left hand side of this site under tools.

You will be hard pressed to get a DVD to fit on 1 CD. Not saying that it can't be done, however, the quality will, well, stink! A lot of this boils down to bit rate. A normal DVD has a variable bit rate of 5000, a CVD usually is in the range of 2500, and a VCD is static bit rate of 1100. To get a "normal" length movie onto one CD, your bit rate would be in the neighborhood of 600 bit rate. If you have done any VCD's that play on a TV over a 9" , the quality doesn't look great. You bit rate for one CD would look real bad. As an FYI on DVD2SVCD (and the others), the programs automatically (actually DVD2SVCD now offers an option to let you cut wherever you want) cut the movie to fit on X CD's, so you don't have to go through all of that. After the process is done, you use a program like nero (there are others), to burn the bin/que file, which basically is all the necessary files to format the CVD to play on your DVD player. A (loose) analogy of the bin/que is a setup.exe program (other members, don't ding me on this, I know that it is different, I am offering an ANALOGY to help), it contains all the files in order to make the "program" work on your computer.

The only other advice I can offer is the DVD player you plan to play it one. Before you use any of the applications, use the DVD player compatibility list on the left to make sure that your DVD can play the format you decide to use (DVD2SVCD=VCD, DVD2VCD=CVD, DVD2DVDr= ???)

    Hope this helps.
