I have a friend who wants me to copy a homemade non-commercial VHS tape to a cd so he can watch it on his laptop...However I just have a DVDR75 standalone DVD recorder...no capture card on my PC though.
Can I create the DVD on the standalone and copy it to a cd using say my Roxio 6?? This is new territory for me so sorry if this has been asked before.

Providing your DVD-Rom in your PC can read the discs that your DVD recorder creates then yes it can be done. Depending on the length of the tape you may want to encode it to a format which allows for greater compression and still maintain good quality. If this is just for viewing on a laptop I would suggest XVID or DIVX for this. If your friend wants to watch it on a home DVD player then VCD or SVCD is the way to go, or just give him a copy of the DVD you record.
See the how to guides for DVD rip, although you can probrably just copy the vob files from your recorded DVD.
See also the convert and author guides.
