  2. A similar thing happened to me (Not HDD failure but coasters).
    Tried uninstalling and re-installing burning programs but to no avail...

    Are you using win2k/xp if so Browse to (in the registry)
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{CE5939AE-EBDE-11D0-B181-0000F8753EC4}

    And check the value of LowerFilters, this is the set of filters that get used between the data leaving your HDD and getting to your CDRW. I had a broken filter. I deleted them all (cleared the key) and re-installed the burning programs I used.

    This fixed it for me (saved a re-install..) do I need to mention be carefull editing the registry and make a backup first.

    Hope this helps...

    Well not wanting to have to try and tweak the reg. I am going to try and re-install my dvd burner update drivers etc. I am just glad to hear there is a chance my cd-rw isn't dead!
