I have tried to convert and burn the second half of this movie about 5 times now... but I just cant figure out how to get past this one particular flaw.....

I downloaded Star Wars Attack of the Clones in two divx avi files (which look excellent) I converted and burned both files on to two cd-r disk.

    Note:
I got no errors whatsoever during the converting or the burning processes

The first half of the movie on the first cd-r worked great and played wonderfully on my dvd player, but on the second disk which was the second half of the movie about 15 minutes before the end the picture froze, although the sound continued on.. the picture just remained froze on that frame.

I then checked the mpeg file itself on my computer and saw that it did the same thing, but I could stop the video and pull the slide bar a little past that point and it seemed to play fine again (but I could not just simply ff past this frame and resume play on my dvd player)

I tried converting the whole thing again with TMPEG from the avi file, but got the same problem in the same place.

So then I tried converting again but this time tried cutting out the offending frames - it appeared that the frame was repeating itself.. so I would cut out one of the frames.. but then I found the problem to occur with other frames shortly after that, so I would try cutting out a few frames there too, but after doing this a couple times TMPEG would freeze up on me and shut down with an unspecific error.. I tried several times

I also tried scanning for unreadable frames in VirtualDub and then resaving the file with another name.. but when I converted that in TMPEG the results would still hit that same point where the picture freezes but the sound plays on..

    The movie is:
    23 fps
    640x272
    xvid

I had no problem on the first disk at all

    Any one have any advice?

  2. Not a whole lot that can be done about this problem.. It's very common with divx files. If reencoding it didn't help, then the only thing I can think of that might fix things is trying out the divx anti freeze patch that you can get off of digital-digest.com.

    http://www.divx-digest.com/software/antifreeze_filter.html

Also, try running divfix or whatever it's called.. it might help find and fix the part of the movie that's messed up.

Thanks DigiToast, I looked there.. but it appears it is only benificial to playing it in media player and "AntiFreeze just avoids permanent freezings during playback, it does not fix the clip." - so it doesnt sound as though it would correct the problem on a vcd.

I'll am going to check out the divx you suggest trying - I'm looking around for it now....

I have the exact same problem with the same film - Attack of the Clones . My version freezes at 50 minutes or so at the scene where Anakin falls off the back of the creature in the field

I've tried everything to correct it - the files did report bad frames which I corrected - I repaired the AC3 sound which also reported errors and still it wouldn't get past the freeze . However playing the Xvid file through PowerDVD everything was fine - so the problem only occurs when converting

If you solve it please let me know

I am currently downloading the 1st part again to try that

  5. I had the exact same problem with Star Wars-AOTC (CD2) in XVID format. It would freeze on video, but continue encoding audio. How i got around that was using dvd2svcd. I combines a lot of other programs to get around it and at the same time you can still use TmpGenc as the primary encoder. The only drawback is that it seems to take longer, especially when using Cinemacraft as the primary encoder.

    Mixter,
My source was a downloaded file and not directly from the dvd.. Can I still use the dvd2svcd software you mention to fix it even though I dont have a dvd player on my computer?
What I ended up doing was cutting out a few seconds where the frozen frame occurred.. it took me several attempts because TMPEG would keep freezing for some reason in this area, but I finally managed to encode another conversion after removing those flawed seconds.

But for future referance, can the dvd2svcd software be used to encode a downloaded avi file?

  7. Yes, you sure can use it to encode an avi that you would download from Kazaa, Winmx, etc.... I dont have a DVD player on my Pc, just a Burner. Whats cool about doing it this way is that it handles Xvid files without having to make all those changes you would have to do in Tmpgenc by itself.
