Depends on what you put into the word "legitimate", but a working one is DVDx. Time taken depends on your DVD reader's read speed, and your computer's processing power. "Under hours" might be achieved, but hardly "under hour".

  3. Sorry, as you pointed out I was'nt all that clear on the word 'legitimate', what I meant was something you have to shell out for, pay for, give up your samosa's, moolah, dosh, bread, dough y'know something that we all try to avoid, lol. Only I have a budget to spend on this and comming back with something free, would not seem to the boss to be a 'Quality Product', he's an ass I know. Anyway is there anything anyone could suggest, for instance is there anything at ulead that does this I've been to their site and they are a little vague, they mention svcd and vcd and dvd but only as output not input. Or any other software company even.

    Thanks

DeCSS programs are illegal, so I'm doubtful that a company like Ulead would put out software that does this...

    Harley,

Try Easy VCD. It can be downloaded for free here: http://www.eazyvcd.tk

The VCD Easy forum is here: http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=114083

I can't say enough good about this program. You load your DVD, click the mouse a couple of times, and go to bed. On my 2000 Pentium 4 I will have the finished product when I wake up in the morning.

The only drawback is it doesn't support SVCD...yet. (The creator is working on that though). It's ease of use easily enables me to live with VCD quality versus SVCD.

    Try it.

  6. OK I tried using vcd easy last night I put in the asapi for xp and downloaded the newest 'chicken' version, however when I tried to start it up with a dvd in the dvd drive it froze both my drive and the program. I couldnt shut the program down even when using ALT-DEL-CTRL so I had to shut down my pc several times because each time I tried it the same thing happened.

    I have a P4 2 gig btw.

also the program runs without a dvd in the drive but freezes as soon as it sees a dvd so your guess is as good as mine as to what the problem is.

  9. EazyVCD not VCDeasy. E-mail the creator on your problem. I had no trouble with using eazyvcd. Its a very simple program to make high quality vcd/xvcd. ( soon to support SVCD/XSVCD )

Good point... while backing up DVDs for personal use is legal, cracking the encryption on the DVDs really isn't. My guess is you will find no "legitimate" all-in-one software - EVER. Multi-step systems exist now but keep in mind that all pay software that has previously come in this vein has been a scam.

Also keep in mind that processor speed and quality affect time to encode. If you want it really fast on a slow processor, expect crap for quality.

  12. I didnt think there would be a program that would do it but riddle me this Batman, what do you do if you make a home movie put it on a disk as DVD then later decide you want to take some out as an mpeg. We all know the freeware answers and the dcss answers how to do this but what about the average schmo who thinks hes stuck with his DVD or is there a program for that and if there is or was, it could be used for lets say, less legitimate uses.

  13. What is the problem with having to use more than one. Its best that way. YOu can use the best ripper, then the best encoder. I like it this way. Otherwise there is always something that you dont like in an all in one.
