    Does it encode straight to MPEG1 and MPEG2?

    No, Vdub converts to AVI only. It is able to open MPEG-1 files. You can use Vdub to frameserve to a MPEG encoder and it is an universal and superb tool at all, but it isn't a MPEG encoder.
