  1. How do i convert asf to mpeg, etc? I've tried TMPGenc, but it didn't work. I hear that Virtual Dub use to do it but Microsoft told them to not allow it. I hear that it's nearly impossible to convert asf to mpeg, etc.

What can i do? Am i doing something wrong?

What happened when you tried TMPGEnc?
    Hello.

  3. When I try to get an "asf" file with TMPGenc, an error message comes up telling me to tell Microsoft about this problem and at the bottom of the mess, it says "send error report" or "don't send".

Man, what version do you have? I have not seen that warning since what. version 2.53?
    Hello.

  5. I have v2.58. I read that Microsoft do not allow converting "asf" to "mpeg, etc" on the newer version, so I have to get an older version, 1.3? If so, where can I get it?

    I have 2.58 Plus.

I was curious when I read this so loaded a wmv8 (asf) file in tmpgenc.

First thing I noticed is that asf is a valid source option in tmpgenc.

The short cartoon encoded fine with no issues.

The out file played fine on my computer.

ASFtool will convert asf to avi check the file with that program see on the left "Other" "Tools" ......

You may be missing plugins. Did you run the vfpapi install.
    check options, environmental settings plugin
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

  7. First off, I would like to apologize if i'm being a pain in the azz!

I don't think i have the plug in, but can you give me step by step to install it, where to get it, and so on. I've check their site and downladed a plug in but still confused. Just tell me exactly what I should do in the next step. Thanks

you probably only have to run the install bat file.

The other checks were just to make sure that the right boxes are ticked on in tmpgenc.

Open Tmpgenc and look at the top menu under "option" Then click on "Environmental Settings" then click "VFAPI Plugin"

Are all the boxes "ticked". If you pass the mouse pointer over the boxes it will tell you what its for.

Some people say not to check the "Directshow multimedia file reader" but that is the one file reader that accepts asf as input. So make sure that it is checked on.

If this does not work then make sure you check the file by looking on the left panel of this forum as I suggested. Get Asftool and see if that program can read it and try to convert to avi. I know you don't want avi but this will tell you if the file is good. Worst case scenario is if it converts then feed that file to tmpgenc.

    PS (just another tip)

while you are in tmpgenc and checking things look at the cpu settings and make sure they match yours. If you don't have at least MMX or SSE for p3 or SSE2 for p4 then your encodes will take much longer.

Sorry I did not tell you where to get the plugin if you don't have it.

Go on the left of this post and look at Other ...tools then look for tmpgenc

That will take you to the site. There is copy matching every version of tmpgenc ... if you cant see it look at the top panel on the site for "downloads" and I think all versions will appear for you. Just select the right one.

Thank you so much! I have tried "asftool" and it worked wonderfully. I really appreciate the time you put into helping me. Thanks again and bless you!
