  1. I am trying to encode 5.1 surround sound onto a DVDR from AVI initially with synched audio.

I currently run Nuendo 1.52 multitrack system, and it produces 6 channel mono wav files.

I then incorporate 6 channel mono wav files and synch with AVI with Vegas Video to encode to MPEG 2 Vegas Video uses "Main Concept" MPEG2 encoder which has NTSC DVD template, but no variation on audio component.

Is there a way to encode MPEG2 to have 5.1 surround audio? If so which programs convert avi + 6 channel audio to MPEG2/5.1 surround? Or am I stuck with stereo audio with DVD?

Do I need a dolby digital encoder?

You need a DD encoder. Options are Sonic Foundry SoftEncode (discontinued) or BeSweet + plugins from doom9.org. Use the encoder to get an AC3 file. Render video only from VV3. You don't say what you're using to author. Some high end programs will take AC3 and video as elementary streams. I use TMPGenc to mux the AC3 and video. Then I use DVD Workshop to author that.

Search on "AC3" in the forums, there's a lot of info in there.

  3. I am using Vegas Video to synch the audio to the video and then encode to MPEG2 with "Main Concept" plug in that came with Vegas Video. To burn the DVD itself I am using Sonic DVDitSE! and also for menus and chapters. I am up for any better programs. I also have TMPGE but haven't had too much success with it for encoding.
