Well, I give up. After much research here on VCD Help (Thanks everyone!), and email traffic with Sony I deem it impossible to make a menu work on an SVCD in a sony standalone player. I have attached below snipets of the Sony message traffic for any it might help in the future. Bottom line is this: SONY offically does not support SVCD. We know better, it will play SVCD format - but SONY does not stand behind it, and if the menus dont work SONYs answer is tuff doo doo.
-----Response from Sony to initial question ------
Body Text: Does this player support menus under the SVCD format?
Model Name: DVP NS715P
II. What Video Recording Formats does my DVD player support?
The video recording format supported by your unit varies according to the
manufacturing year and model you own. The supported formats and media for
each model are listed in the User's Manual that shipped with your product.
For your convenience we will briefly outline some guidelines below:
All SONY DVD Player/Changers manufactured prior to our 2001 model line only
supported CDs and DVDs which were commercially produced. These models are
not designed to be compatible with CDs or DVDs that are produced on a
CD-R/CD-RW, DVD-R or DVD-RW recording unit. Only SONY's high end DVD players
(which featured a "Dual Discrete" Optical Pickup) are compatible with the
CD-R media format (DVP-S7000 & DVP-S7700). Although it is possible that
other older models may be able to read these discs, they are not designed,
or supported, to do so.
Beginning with our 2001 model line, all of our single disc players were
compatible with the CD-R media format except for the DVP-NS300. Although
some customers have stated that they have been able use high grade recorded
CD-R media for playback in their DVP-NS300 it is not designed, or supported,
to do so. None of the 2001 DVD Changer models support this media format.
Our current model line offers units that are compatible with not only
CD-R/RW media, but DVD-R/R+W and R-W media. For more information on the
supported formats of any current model DVD player/changer, you may review
the specifications listed on our SonyStyle website ay URL:

-----Futher clarification Question-------
I appreciate the reply. I have a question for clarification. Your email
does not list SVCD as a supported format. Yet when a SVCD is placed in the player, the device correct displays a message PLAY SVCD (it also correct identifies VCDs by saying PLAY VCD). It is just the SVCD menus that do not work.
My question is this: Is SONY saying that the SVCD format is not supported?
-------And Sony's answer--------
Thank you for contacting SONY Online Support.
Unfortunately SVCD is not supported by Sony at this time.
Thank you for the opportunity to be of assistance.

Your info is much appreciated. I have the same dvd player and I can run vcd menus without any problems, but the svcd menus don't work. I have attempted to find the answer from a Pinnacle discussion board, without any help whatsoever.
Your post has answered my question.
Wonder what dvd players do support svcd menus?
Thanks!Jack -
Good question. I asked this board last week if anyone was successful in getting any DVD player to work with SVCD and menus. No one responded. I dont know if I forgot my deodorant that day or if SVCD simply doesnt work with menus. Please let me know if you find anything...
BTW, the GNUimager Test SVCD with menus plays in Intervideo WinDVD4 (PC Software) perfectly. I dont know if this is an anomoly of WinDVD or of the standalones.
