  1. Hello,
This is probably simple. But I'm new. I ran a search but couldn't find an answer.
I used DVDx 1.2 to convert the ripped .vob to MPEG1 352x240. And then use VCDEasy to make the .bin and burn to the CD.
I tried to change to SVCD 480x480 MPEG2 . But when I try to add the new MPEG2 into VCDEasy, it gives an error message " 480x480 is not a valid resolution for FILM encoded sequence".
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Kevin

SVCD doesn't have the 23.976 frame rate (FILM) - only 29.97 fps, unlike VCD which has both. You have to use the program pulldown.exe to make the 23.976 MPEG2 video 29.97fps then you can make you SVCD.

  3. Alf,
I tried to use it, but it says "file is not an MPEG video stream". Not sure what's up.

Make sure you use the Pulldown.exe (or the GUI version which is better) on the VIDEO STREAM ONLY...

This means ONLY the VIDEO, BEFORE you MULTIPLEX...

Then, when you multiplex the video with the audio (with bbMPEG, I hope) it will properly mux your video to be 29.97, and VCDEasy should accept it then.

  5. I guess I still don't understand everything clearly yet. I did not deal with the video and audio streams separately- at least I did not realize I was.
Where should I go to read about that? Are the articles on this site enough?

    Thanks

A .mpg file is a wrapper for the various streams that are inside it ( similar to .avi or .mov ). TMPG has a set of tools called simple de-multiples ( seperate the streams out ) and simple multiplex ( recombine the streams ).

Easiest way it so de-muntiplex ( TMPGenc->file/mpeg tools/ ) then execute pulldown.exe <videostream.m2v > < outputvideo.m2v > then go back into TMPGenc->file/mpeg tools and take the new video stream and the .mp2 file from the de-multiplex and make a new 29.97 .mpg. Remeber to selece SVCD for the format type.

The file will be almost identical, except the pulldown flags will have been added so that it can be played back at 29.97 nativly and computer will still skip those and just play back the 23.976 film speed as well. It's the best of both worlds.

  7. snowmoon,
Thanks a lot. I'll try that. But one more question: if I understood correctly, what you described assumes I'm starting with 23.976 MPEG. How about when I start encoding the ripped VOB into an MPEG in the first place? Is there a way to get the MPEG output correctly in SVCD 29.97 format in one step from the beginning?

Also, I was looking in the syntax help of PullDown.exe, and it looks like it takes an MPEG and ouputs an M2V. But in your message, it looked like you feed an M2V to it as well. I'm a little confused. Where do you get the starting M2V

    Thanks
    Kevin

The .m2v/mpv/... is the video only part of the .mpg stream. Like I said the .mpg file you generate has at least one video stream and at least one audio stream both of which can be seperated out without any harm.

I'm not sure why DVDx does not make that correction for you, I would check the help files and documentation for pulldown, 3:2 pulldown, telecine, ...

    Good luck.
