Windows from MicroSh1t seems a garbage OS many of us are almost stuck with, I went from win 3.11 to win 95 then win 98 (undone that problem child untill I upgraded to Win98se I currently use.
I plan to get a A04 burner and want to do more with digital video, should I upgrade to Windows 2000, XP, ME etc.
I am not crazy about going to xp [eXpires Peridicly]. I am told windows 2000 [none xp] is a good OS. I know I will have other issues of software and hardware not being compatable with win2000.
What do you think, use and what have you learned?

I switched from Win98se to Windows 2K about 7 months ago and never looked back. Win 2K is much more stable than Win 9x/Me and you also get the option of FAT32 or NTFS. Win XP is just a prettier, fatter and slower version of Win 2K. I can capture, edit, encode and burn with no problems. If you do upgrade just make sure your hardware has Win2K drivers (some of my older hardware didn't.)

I upgraded to Win2000Pro and I haven't looked back either (except to wonder what the hell took Microsoft so long to get a stable OS). It is based on the WinNT core, with much better driver support than NT. The only device that I didn't get a driver from MS was an old Relysis SCSI scanner (which is still a fantastic scanner). However, I got the driver from another place. I would steer clear of XP, because of its reported compatibility problems. Win ME is, and always will be, a piece of shit - can't for the life of me figure out what MS was trying to accomplish with that release.
For video, you'll want an NTFS file structure. This leaves NT, W2K and (I think) XP-Pro as your options. If you want my opinion, W2KPro is the way to go. -
Win98SE probably has the best software and hardware compatibility but the FAT32 limitation will be of extreme annoyance.
WinXP probably has the best hardware and software compatibility of the WinNT line of OSes and I highly recommend it. If you don't like the gawdy interface (I certainly don't), you can turn it off. It looks for all the world like Win2K then.

I'm running XP pro, all my software for caputre, encode and burning to my A04 is compatible and working fine. I don't install anyting else not related to video editing so I don't worry about other softwares compatibility, I have another hard drive with Win98 for other purposes.

I am currently using Win2K Pro (NTFS partitions) for all my home use incl VCD/SVCD burning. I am very satisfied with the stability and security of this OS. Having said that, I suppose XP would be equal in comparison. However, I refuse to buy the XP-Pro as long as Microsoft keeps the WPA feature. I upgrade my PC frequently and can't have the uncertainty to the event when XP will ask me to activate the product again.
