  3. Pardon me. I don't actually know what speed they write at but the easiest way to look at it is this.
This is an emergent technology so the first cut is not likely to be fast. You can bet that a year or two from now they'll run reasonably quickly but these 'first cut' burners are likely to be similar in capability to the early CD writers.
You want cheap and fast, wait. You want it now, it's gonna be slow and you're gonna pay for it. ( Says he with his old double speed CD burner )

  4. Hi all,

Ehm Greg12. A DVD writer does indeed write at 1x or 2x, but a DVD writer is NOT a cd writer. If a dvd writer writes at 2x with 300kb/s there would fit about 74 minutes/650 MB on a DVD. Which is what we call a CDR....
Because of the much higher density a DVD uses, a 2x DVD writer is about as fast as a 12x CDR writer.
2x DVD writing still takes a lot of time, but you can atleast get 4.7 GIG of data on a disc which normaly would only contain 650Mb.

It takes a little longer than an hour to write a full DVD at 2x. That's between 10x-8x if comparing to CD writing speeds. Most of the time it seems closer to 8x.
