Does anyone know if Microsoft's upcoming X-BOX will be able to play any of the abovementioned formats. I have been trying to hunt around for information about this, but have been unable to find any.

It would be quite nice if it could play cDVD's as this console is fairly likely to make it's way into many, many homes - whatever our opinion of Microsoft is...

I think this screenshot sums up the capabilities of the system:

Dear "Chopper Face", would you care to explain how the screenshot of a general purpose operating system, designed for hundreds of different computers with an endless array of add-on cards and configurations, sums up the capabilities of a purpose built operating system running on a known non-changeble platform.

By-the-way, I don't particularly like Microsoft and their overhyping marketing machine, but I fail to see your argument.

  6. gudthor, your question is unanswerable because nobody HAS an X-BOX.

And even if a developmental version could play miniDVDs, there's no reason why the retail one would.

  7. Dreamcast=Windows CE
    XBox=Windows CE

I bet XBox will play everything, in time. Gates doesnt care about selling games, just units. If his XBox can play other systems, like DC can play just about every system out there, hes gonna get rich. Its just gonna take some 12 year old to write an emulator. I bet that the XBox will be able, not fresh outta the box, to play PSX, PSX2, DC, MPG and AVI (I bet with the hard drive you can play DivX , how sweet would that be!?!?) and all the others. XBox will rule! Just think of what the Dreamcast can do!

ps-Have you registered for CES yet?

  8. Are you sure it's going to run on WinCE? I thought that it was going to be a special build of NT or something.

In any case, I agree with your sentiment.

  9. I heard that it was on Windows CE. I just saw a site that said Windows 2000 Kernel. Dont know for sure. I just think that the Dreamcast and the XBox are very similar.

  10. If the Xbox can do WindowsCE, it makes me wonder if I can plop a DC browser CD right out of the box and use the Xbox as a cheap internet machine?

Anyhow from what I heard, Xbox would be nothing more than a silmed down standard issue PC with many of the standard supports like IDE drives and networking. And for about $300, I think I'll wait for Xbox emulator for my 1GHz PC with 512M RAM and nearly 1/2 TB worth of hard drives. I wouldn't need to blow $300 on yet another PC, especially one built by M$ who already has a repuation for unreliable software. (See Chopper Face post above for reference)

in time, PS2 will be able to play VCD and SVCD.

It can even use Hardware MPEG2 decoder but the VCD will have to be software only.

Oh, I heard it will have a Windows CE interface but use Windows 2000 based OS Coding.

    Like a hybrid.

Doesn't the mpeg2 spec require that it be backwards compatible and be capable of decoding mpeg1 also?

  14. X-Box runs on a special built OS not Windows CE so a Dreamcast browser wouldnt work. As for the OS stability dont you think it would have to be stable seeing that it has to be virtually idiot proof?
