if this is possible, what brand, software (i have nero), and process would be recommended. i know how much these cost and where should i buy from. (not online)

bogus.
no such thing
you're thinking of dvd-r. the drives cost about six-fitty.
media cost about ten chalupas
THIS IS HARDCORE -
Bogus II
you also need a DVD burner for DVD-R. With you CD burner you can burn only CD-R.

the 4.7 gig discs you've heard about are most likely DVD-RAM discs. The lowest cost i've seen these drives for was $335. These should play dvd-video dvd players with IDE dvd rom drives, don't know about other players. Does anyone know anything else about these drives? -- the prices are coming down (probably because they're phasing them out for the new RW+ format but. . .)

there are no 4.7 gig cd-r's.
They're DVD-R's which require a DVD-R drive (dvd burner)
What there will be soon though are DDCD-R's (Double Density) which I think are either 1.7 or 1.3 gigs. There's a catch though, they most likely won't be compatible with VCD and DVD players and you need to buy a DDCD Burner. I think you should stick to normal cdr -
sony's ddcd is 1.5 gb.
tdk's ml-cd is 2.0 gb.
tdk's is far superior to sony's because their technology is easy to implement, larger capacity, and sony just has this habit of making bogus sony-only formats...such as minidisc...memorystick...betamax... all these formats are nice, but they pull an apple every time and keep their patents to themselves.

i was thinking... do any cdr's exist that are double sided like dvd discs? like 650 or 700 megs on each side.of course you would still have to flip the disc to play the other side but you could fit a mvie on one disc.

are these for general use for burning in my regular cd burner? can i burn any data or music on them?
sony's ddcd is 1.5 gb.

I dont know, i dont think i would enjoy that double writable side cd. It would be a pain in the ass to maintain. IE: you drop the cd, it's scratched...you cant label it...
ill stick with 2 cd's... -

No. This is impossible without having your media about twice as thick (which is bad, bad, bad). Or, someone will have to invent some replacement material for the polycarbonate substrate that will do the same job but with a higher refractive index (I don't think this exists either).

The Sony media can only be written on and read by the special Sony drive. You can use these media for data only (you definitely can't make a super long audio CD or VCD).
I don't know about the TDK media but I would presume that it would be in a similar position as the Sony media.

according to tdk, the process of tripling capacity involves the replacement of one integrated circuit that is used my most all cd burners. im sure that is not the sole difference though, but it sure would be easier to implement than whatever sony is doing. tdk will not pull an apple either. they will not be exclusive....
royalties baby.
screw sony.....anyone want my receiver?

Hahaha.... He's definately smoking somthing, or a newbie. I'd say DVD RAM is what you are talking about, which is about $700 for a drive, and the recordable DVDs are even more then a normal movie I believe. As for a 4.7 GB cd, might be possible with some form of compression with certain types of files (text maybe), but for mpeg technology, it's impossible. You all know what I am talking about if you have ever tried to zip up an mp3/mpeg video, they don't compress anymore.....
