  1. My system: Rage fury pro 32
    CPU: p3 500 MHz
    Drive: 10 GB
    OS: Win ME
I captured a video from a tape using MMC 7.1 into a MPEG file using video-in. While playing it back the screen got stuck after 30 secs and kept on playing a few frames over and over again. I have tried many speed and compression variation, but no luck. I will appreciate if anyone has come across similar problems and has a solution.

  2. you should try a non-copy-protected source. that's your problem.

  3. No, that is not it. The tape was created by my own camera.

  4. well, two things to do about that. first, write to ATI tech support, call them collect (it's in canada) or whatever, and bitch like hell about this. putting macrovision on their cards was the stupidest thing they've ever done. and it's done so poorly it occasionally interferes with legit stuff, not to mention copying your own vhs tapes for personal use is legit as well. so just keep writing back and complaining about it. i've been doing this for a couple weeks myself. if enough people complain, maybe it'll go away sooner or later. it's software controlled, so it's just a matter of a new MMC version.

also search around for a program called "atimacro30" or "atimacro30s" or something. i found it a while back on http://www.rage3d.com 's boards, but i don't have it anymore. it stops the repeating of the output, but doesn't always get rid of the automatic brightness cycling you might get instead of/ in addition to the looping. it works with some drivers and not others. i had it work in one winME install, and not the next time. but it's better than nothing, and it may fix your camcorder problem. but keep giving it to ATI though.

  5. The first thing you might want to do is to remove ME and install Win2000 or WIn98 SE if your hardware and other software are compatible with either. I have had nothing but trouble with ME. It is so unreliable as to not be able to detect a Sound Blaster PCI card. Installing Win2000 on the same machine and it found the sound card and worked fine. I work on systems daily and am in contact with others in the field and I have yet to hear any positive comments on ME.
Good Luck and I hope this helps.

  6. ME works fine for me, and isn't any more crash prone than 98 or 98SE (prob less so than 9. i actually think it's better for ATI users because the system restore is much improved over 98/SE, and that can be invaluable when doing driver installs. the transparent system file protection is also nice, and prevents conflicts that the old ATI MMC's used to have. once you turn off the crappy 'features' like dr. watson etc etc, it's just 98SE with all the patches installed.

win2K is very good, but using the vfw wrapper isnt' the best performance choice, so it is useful to have a 9x OS too. and managing a dual boot is so simple with 2K there's no reason not to.
